Engaging with Student Life to Optimize Health
The Student Union Assembly reached out to CORE to collaborate on a private event for coping with mental and physical health stressors surrounding finals and test taking. On the sunny mid-morning of March 13th, talented massage therapist Juan Alvizar offered five-minute chair massages to UC Santa Cruz Students. The event was held at the Bay Tree Bookstore conference room with access to a balcony patio with views of beautiful trees. The room had large windows for sunlight to shine through. The light created a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. Massage demos melted stress away to the sound of feel-good music in the background. Additionally, the assembly helped to set the massage therapy vibes by having an aromatherapy diffuser, face-masks, and healthy snacks and beverages available!
Stress Management
Juan took the time to talk with students about their needs and goals. He also checked in with them after the five minutes to see how they felt. To many of the students’ surprise, even just five minutes of massage made a difference! Students learned about the perks of massage therapy and how it is beneficial for the body and mind. We gave tips for correct computer or desk posture such as elevating the computer with books or adjusting the chair height. Another helpful technique is taking a break to do the “Superman” pose. The pose is a great posture stretch and a confidence booster. We also demonstrated how to hold your phone so that you do not strain your neck and eyes. Proper phone posture reduces the chances of a headache too!
CORE had a great time getting to know so many students who were looking for ways to achieve optimal health. It is so important for people to know all of the alternative approaches for stress and wellness management. Especially students because they make up such a large part of the Santa Cruz community! We want to connect with even more students and support them in their health journies!
