The Functional Integrative Model
The functional integrative model is what sets us apart from other gyms and wellness centers of our kind. Applied to personal training, functional integration means breaking the cycle. Old injuries, accidents, desk jobs, commutes and busy schedules cause us to feel deactivated and disconnected from our bodies. We want to move and get back to optimal health, but our bodies and minds resist. Pain, fatigue and physical restrictions discourage us and understandably so. Santa Cruz CORE breaks the cycle to get you results. We help you change your life.
The Functional Movement Screening
The first step is to schedule an initial health consultation with one of the highly skilled professionals at CORE, who will get a full health history and administer a Functional Movement Screening (FMS). An FMS is a valuable test instrument, and we interpret the results and translate that information into a recommended course of action. This process provides an injury-free path to a healthy and balanced fitness plan.
Our individualized programs are molded from the experience and knowledge of all of our practitioners, a knowledge base that produces timely and healthy results.
We provide consultations free of charge with the primary goal of determining the needs of the individual, this is our time to listen to you. Once we determine your functional state we design a program specific to the individual. Your trainer is your partner, your guide, mentor and support system on your journey to optimal health and fitness.
An Elite Assessment includes range of motion, muscle length testing and postural analysis. It is a step up from the Functional Movement Assessment, because it dives deeper into the issues of each joint in the body not just movement patterns.
Some exercises and soft tissue work may be done as well.
In addition to personal training, Santa Cruz CORE trainers are experts in Corrective Exercise, also known as therapeutic exercise, to help alleviate and fix the symptoms of sports-related or other types of injuries. At Santa Cruz CORE, we offer specialized programs that ensure optimal sports performance programs. Each person, and sport, has specialized needs and therefore require a specialized program. Our instructors will meet with you and assess your needs as an athlete. After, they will develop a specific plan especially designed to your needs.

Core Elite Trainers
A Santa Cruz Core Elite Personal Trainer has 10 to 20+ years experience and has developed a unique training specialization that is part of the Continuing Education Program offered at Santa Cruz Core Fitness + Rehab. Our Core Elite trainers’ specializations include Physiotherapy, Nutrition, Sports Conditioning, Weight Management, Corrective Exercises and Injury Rehabilitation among others. An Elite Trainer’s time goes well beyond the hour that they spend with you, often researching and modifying programs to fit your very specific needs and goals, as well as administering Home Exercise Programs, Home Rehabilitative Programs, and nutritional advice to overcome stubborn plateaus or to live a healthier life.
Core Master Trainers
A Santa Cruz Core Master Trainer has 5+ years experience and has completed the Santa Cruz Core Master Training Educational Course as well as being Nationally Certified and CPR Certified. A Master Trainer is able to prescribe Home Exercise Programs as well as design personalized exercise programs to meet your specific needs, abilities as well as help you attain your fitness goals.

Pro Elite Trainers
Clark Carabelas is a Certified Personal Trainer with the National Academy of Sports Medicine. He has a B.A. in Psychology and completed two years of graduate studies in Physical Therapy. Clark’s extensive background includes more than 12 years in orthopedics and geriatrics, and the past 15 years as a Personal Trainer and Nutrition/Lifestyle Consultant. He has completed advanced studies in scientific back, core, and specialized sports conditioning subjects, including golf, motocross, tennis and horseback riding. Clark has presented as a guest speaker at numerous business meetings and healthcare seminars.His experience extends to all ages and lifestyles, from the sedentary to the elite athlete, with or without complex medical histories. Clark also specializes in post injury rehab and re- injury prevention. With his vast knowledge and experience, Clark is able to individualize programs for each person he works with, and feels there is nothing more gratifying than making a positive difference in someone’s life.

Jaimi Jansen has been working as a trainer for over 10 years. Her passion for health and wellness come from her life as an athlete as well as her personal experience gained through her struggle with serious injuries sustained from an accident she had at age 18. In order to understand the body so as to help herself and others, Jaimi earned a degree in Biochemistry through UC Santa Cruz, and went on to become a Certified Nutritionist and Personal Trainer. Certified through the National Academy of Sports Medicine, Hanson Muscle Technique and as a massage therapist, she uses a combination of hands-on techniques and specific exercises to get her clients amazing results. She specializes in preventative medicine and has worked with not only community members, but college and professional athletes including NFL, NBA, & MLB. Jaimi’s goal is to improve the quality of life and help people achieve the optimal path to health by creating a community of wellness. In 2009 her dream of providing all-inclusive care was realized when she founded Santa Cruz CORE Fitness + Rehab. In 2013 she was awarded the United States Associate of Small Business and Entrepreneurship Female Entrepreneur of the year. She continues to share her passion through the growth of her business and formation of the nonprofit Santa Cruz CORE Foundation. Passionate about her community and health for all, Jaimi and Santa Cruz CORE offer many sponsorships and donations and strive to be active and involved with local events and non-profit organizations.

Beau Jansen has been working as a personal trainer since 2003. As an U.S. Air Force Veteran he has gained valuable experience train-ing Airmen to be physically fit and to overcome injuries. He has worked with professional athletes, recreational athletes, patients needing rehab from surgeries, individuals seeking weight loss, and those with aesthetic goals. He pays close attention to form and detail. Beau challenges his clients to do their very best and his belief in his clients is demonstrated by the incredible results they are able to achieve. He walks his talk. Not only does Beau work to reach his body’s full potential by working hard in the gym but enjoys working to stay healthy and strong in the kitchen as well. He's familiar with the old adage

In addition to his US Air Force background, Beau holds certifications from the National Academy of Sports Medicine, Precision Nutrition, Functional Movement Systems, and Hanson Muscle Therapy (HMT). With this combination Beau is able to not only direct clients in how to move their body, but also provides manual therapy as necessary to release any trigger points that may be hindering the body’s ability to heal or perform. Working at Santa Cruz CORE since its inception he has built a training department and acts as Fitness Director. Not only does he educate clients but works with his colleagues to build the best team of personal trainers, corrective exercise and performance specialists around.

Carlos Salas has been a personal trainer for over 20 years. He has worked on and off at CORE for 8 years. As a CORE Pro Elite Trainer, Carlos has advanced knowledge of body mechanics as well as experience with nutrition counseling. He is certified in S.A.C CAN/USA Level 1, Crossfit Level 1, Active Isolation Stretch Therapy, Trigger Point, Pilates Reformer, Spin Cycle, and Functional Fitness Training. With many years of experience as a physical therapist aid, Carlos specializes in pre and post rehabilitation. His goal is to add life to people’s years, and years to their lives. When Carlos is not working, he is spending time with his wife, exploring some of the best restaurants the Bay Area has to offer and working on his house.
Samantha Matthews is an Integrative Physiotherapist with a lifetime of training and experience in optimal mind-body fitness. Her mission in life is to give her clients the tools they need to heal themselves. She is dedicated to continually being a student and leader of the mind-body arts. Samantha has 26 years of teaching experience and 31 years of practice in yoga, meditation, dance, functional fitness, osteopathic massage, and energy work. Through combining these skills she is a highly regarded physiotherapist addressing individuals postural needs to be confident and pain-free. She also has specialized training in treating neuro-degenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and women’s reproductive health practices that help women enliven the relationship they have with their body and both prepare for and heal from childbirth. Samantha is passionate about giving people the tools they need to heal themselves.

Danny Stevens has been a personal trainer since 2006. He has worked with a variety of people including competitive athletes, people wanting to improve movement function and balance, and people looking to lose weight and increase strength. With a degree in kinesiology and a certification from the American College of Sports Medicine, he is equipped with the education and experience to help people achieve their fitness goals.

Sandra Larsen CPT, N.C. is a Holistic Health Practitioner and personal trainer (NASM). She has been a student and practitioner of the Healing Arts since 1987. Her broad foundation in the Healing Arts includes certification in Nutrition from Bauman College, a degree in Horticulture and (BASI) Pilates Certification. Reducing inflammation can play a significant role in the reduction of pain and other chronic symptoms. Left unaddressed inflammation can blossom into more serious issues. Sandra teaches that prevention is key. Sandra has experience working in the medical field at an Integrative Pain Management Clinic where she taught Nutrition and Somatic Therapies to clients suffering in chronic pain.
James Lewis retired from active duty after spending twenty years in the Navy. He has worked as an assistant personal trainer at the University of California, Santa Cruz while completing his studies in Kinesiology and is now a Personal Trainer at Santa Cruz CORE. Having had experience participating in and training others in bootcamps he is now leading Santa Cruz CORE’s outdoor bootcamp programs. In addition to training and writing, he loves to DJ and has a collection of over 300 vinyl records. He also does extensive volunteer work at a local Stroke Rehabilitation Center and Veterans Assistance Center. James hopes to resume his role as a Big Brother in the Big Brothers & Big Sisters program soon.
Gui Ferreira is from Brazil and has his B.A. in Physical Education. He has been working as a personal trainer, swim instructor, and weight lifting instructor since 2006 in Brazil and moved to Santa Cruz in 2013. Over the years he has worked in a number of different environments from top notch gyms where he helped people meet their fitness goals and achieve optimal health, to offices where he has helped people learn exercises to avoid injury from sedentary or repetitive movements. Gui is a certified yoga teacher, and has been practicing and teaching for over 10 years. He is also passionate about capoeira, a Brazilian martial art that he began training as a teenager and continues to teach here in Santa Cruz and Monterey to both children and adults. Gui brings a depth of knowledge about fitness and a desire to help his clients find the balance of body, mind and spirit.

Alex Soto is a local Santa Cruz Certified Personal Trainer. He received his certification from the International Sports Sciences Association in 2011 and has trained with individuals seeking to excel their weight lifting skills and weight loss management. Alex has also studied with Dr. Jack Barnathan in Los Angeles, CA to continue to stay on the cutting edge of personal training and exercise science.In addition to being a Personal Trainer, Alex has several years of experience in the medical field providing emergency care for Santa Clara County through the 911 system. Alex stays active outside of the gym surfing, running at the beach, or challenging himself at those Sea Cliff stairs. He is currently working on strengthening and condition for wind surfing.
Cala Remick-Rodriguez became a Certified Massage Therapist in 2008, when she found her passion helping clients get out of pain and on the road to optimal health. In 2015, Cala attended the National Holistic Institute where she studied medical massage in a Neuromuscular Therapy Program. She became familiar with the entire skeletal, nervous and muscular system; along with syndromes, injuries, surgeries, rehabilitation and corrective actions. It was at this point that Cala realized there was so much more that she could be doing to help her clients get out of pain; educating and exercise was a necessity. She then went on to become a Certified Personal Trainer in 2016 at the National Academy of Sports Medicine. As a Neuromuscular Therapist and Personal Trainer, she has worked with clients in chronic pain, post surgery knee replacements, sedentary lifestyle, spinal fusions and arthroscopic meniscectomy.
Cala’s compassionate nature provides for a positive and encouraging experience with her clients. Her goal is to see each client succeed at reaching their optimal health. In the future, Cala plans to continue her education in functional movement, Corrective Actions and Somatics. When Cala is not busy working, she enjoys hiking with her dogs, rock climbing, cycling, enjoying the beach and running.
