“Vampire” Facials get their name from the use of a person’s own blood to perform a facial with results like no other.
Vampire Facials have the power to tighten skin, get rid of acne scars, aging spots, and wrinkles all without the use of cosmetic filler gels or botox. How is this possible? It is all thanks to the power of regenerative medicine!
Vampire Facials are the cosmetic use of a regenerative treatment called prolotherapy, an injection-based delivery of healing solutions for tissue repair. Amongst the different kinds of prolotherapy injections is that of Platelet-Rich Plasma (or PRP) which is derived from a person’s own blood. Vampire Facials make use
of PRP as an injection.
Platelet-rich Plasma
PRP injections have had a huge impact in the treatment of musculoskeletal pain associated with tendon and ligament injuries. This is mainly because platelets found in blood have the ability to induce healing. They do this by releasing growth factors that will initiate tissue repair. When used in tendons, the growth factors reinforce weakened tendons/ligaments by triggering inflammation. This inflammation stimulates the formation of new fibrous tissue.
Cosmetic Use
PRP injections deliver amazing cosmetic results because these induce natural skin healing and repair. It is almost like turning back time and repairing the effects of aging. Microneedles deliver the PRP injections, preventing scarring and discomfort.
The regeneration of skin components leads to the repair of unwanted acne scars, wrinkles, fine lines, loose skin, and spots. All of this is achieved because the skin is reinforced and repaired for a tighter feel and texture, while the repair mechanisms of platelets restore the cells in scarred/damaged tissue. In this manner, PRP can help get rid of spots resulting from sun damage.
The Vampire Facial Process
Almost anything dealing with blood can sound a little scary, so let’s break down the process and know what to expect. In order to perform a vampire facial, the practitioner needs to draw some of the patient’s own blood. The blood is then centrifuged, a process in which red/white blood cells are separated from the blood plasma and its platelets are concentrated. This is as scary as it gets.
Once the PRP has been prepared, the process begins The concentrated plasma is delivered to skin tissues of the face and is completely painless. By the end of the treatment, the face tends to have a reddish look, but there are no major lesions. It just looks very vampire-like. The reddening of the face will not last very long; for most, a day or two is all it takes for the redness to pass. Once the reddening clears, however, one can truly appreciate the rejuvenation the skin has undergone and the power of this therapy.
Depending on what one is trying to get out of Vampire Facials, the number of required visits may vary. Getting rid of acne scars, for example, will require multiple visits. Yet results are easy to appreciate after the very first visit.
