Stay Healthy While Traveling

Summer is a time for traveling. But, don’t worry if you have a strict fitness regime to stick to. There are lots of way to stay healthy and active while on the move.

Here are 5 helpful tips to stay on track while on the road (sky).

Pack Healthy Sandwiches for the plane ride! The TSA may be strict on fluids, but healthy snacks still make it through security. Ezekiel bread, Avocado, sliced Chicken breast, and Kale is a delicious and healthy option. Try toasting the bread to give it a little crunch. Add mustard and Rice cheese to seal the deal. Bring two or three depending on the flight time.
Stretching: This is a surprisingly simple but effective way to make traveling better. Stretch before, after, and during the flight. Sitting too long can cause sore and stiff muscles. Recommended stretches: Lunge with reach, downward dog, and pec minor grab hands behind the hips. (are we the only ones that think airports should have yoga studios?)
Earplugs and Eye Covers: One of the best ways to make the flight go by is to sleep! Earplugs and Eye masks can help block out the light and sound which may disrupt the circadian rhythm. Also, to make things more comfy, grab a neck pillow.
Drink Lots of Water: One of the main causes of “jetlag” is actually dehydration. Feeling groggy and disoriented is common after taking long plane rides, but keeping your hydration up can help combat these symptoms. Keep a reusable water bottle with you (empty) and then fill it up when through security. Try and drink 2-3 of these. This may lead to lots of bathroom trips, but that leads directly into tip #5.
Get up and go to the bathroom: No matter aisle or window, get up and use the bathroom frequently during a plane flight. Stretching your body and keeping a steady stream of fluid going in and out of your body will help keep things stretched out and functioning as they should be. Don’t worry about what other people think.

Traveling is inevitable and fun! But, it doesn’t mean that healthy lifestyles have to be abandoned for fast food and airport coffee. These tips should help combat the negative effects many think they must live with. Traveling is good for the soul, and now it doesn’t need to be bad for the body.
