Santa Cruz Chamber women consider Gen Y

Jaimi Ellison got excited when one of the speakers at the Santa Cruz Chamber Women in Business conference announced the topic for a leadership exercise: How to attract women under 30 to the organization.

Ellison, 28, was the youngest in the room.

“It was a really smart way to run that day, asking members how do we make this program prosper,'” she said. “I was ready to volunteer.”

Ellison opened Santa Cruz Core Fitness a year ago, despite her youth and despite a recession that’s been the worst in 80 years. She discovered her passion as a student at UC Santa C ruz, undergoing months of rehab after being hit by a car while riding a bike. The experience made her more of a risk-taker.

“You’ve got to put yourself out there,” she said.
