The Dangers of Diet Pills

Diet pills are available over-the-counter everywhere- the pharmacy, the grocery store, the gym. These can be tempting for anyone struggling with weight and body image problems. But one should think twice before taking pills for weight loss as they can lead to a range of health problems.

Unfortunately, dietary supplements are not monitored by the FDA (Federal Food and Drug Administration). Which leaves a platform for excessive marketing and unsupported claims about weight loss and health. It takes time to gain weight and it is only common sense that it will take time to lose it.

Pills for Weight Loss

Diet pills can be effective at promoting weight loss, but at an expense to health. These pills are not monitored by the FDA and their safety claims are not at all grounded. Active ingredients in these pills may unapproved, banned, and not fit for human consumption. Many of these “designer” molecules are replica attempts of substances previously banned due to health concerns.

Due to their many times unknown content, diet pills can lead to a range of side-effects that are difficult to treat. Some substances found in some diet pills can cause liver problems, severe dehydration, and tachycardia.

Diet pills are often coupled with extreme dieting which can be a risk for nutrient deficiency. Individuals with eating disorders, adolescents, and those with psychological issues may fall victim to diet pill claims.

The Reliance on Caffeine

A great deal of weight-loss pills rely heavily on caffeine. Caffeine can provide energy to make up for low-energy associated with extreme dieting. Caffeine also increases the use of free fatty acids for energy production.

Unfortunately, caffeine is also a diuretic and contributes to dehydration. This can be dangerous if individuals don’t stay hydrated and can even send them to the emergency room with tachycardias.

How much of it is Water Weight?

It is normal for the majority of weight-loss at the beginning of a training regimen to consist mostly of water. This is especially true for those who frequent pre-workout drinks that are packed with caffeine. It isn’t until weeks later the start of a workout regimen that the body starts burning primarily fat tissue.

Since many diet pills are also packed with caffeine, it is very likely that the majority of weight-loss is actually a loss in water weight. This is troubling because once the high caffeine intake stops, the body quickly regains the water weight.

Weight loss is a process, it doesn’t just happen. Any pill or product that claims miraculous results when it comes to weight loss is lying. There is no better way to lose weight than through good nutrition, exercise, and a healthy lifestyle. Do not be deceived into harming your body for quick results.
