The Surf City Triathlon

November 2nd, 2014 – Santa Cruz, Ca – The Surf City Long Course Triathlon >> Talk about a great time! This was the first year of The Surf City Triathlon which was actually a half Ironman. The Iron Man Races are intense and make your average triathlon look like a walk in the park.
This particular half marathon took place on beautiful West Cliff Drive. This race included a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile bike ride, and a 13.1 mile run. Needless to say, an event like this is not for the faint of heart.

The event started at Depot Park in Downtown Santa Cruz, and ended at Cowell’s Beach where the finish was lined with surfboards provided by Club Ed Surf School.

Santa Cruz CORE Fitness + Rehab was set up at the finish line, near the post race nourishment, where we offered massage, stretching and foam rolling to the race finishers. Due to the intensity and duration of the event the finishers were slow and steady with a constant trickle to our booth. The finishers were tired and sore, of course and really appreciated the post race massage that helped flush the lactic acid out of the body from all the work they had just done. Post race massage and stretching helps decrease recovery time and delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS).
Big races like the Surf City Tri are just as much about the training as race day. Race day is the culmination of months of training and hundreds of hours on the bike, in the water and on the trails running. It matters so much how you practice and how you prepare. All in all, this was a great event with lots of action. The event began at 8am, and the last competitors came across the finish line at around 3:45pm using “…every bit of time, and every last resource available”, according to one last race finisher.

You may be thinking. ‘Hey, I can do that.’ And we think you can too! The best practice is to start training well in advance and start with a functional movement assessment to avoid injury that could occur from overuse, bad movement patterning, or lack of time training.
Hiring a trainer can be a great way to ensure that you will meet your goals as they can help with nutrition, training, and injury prevention.
