Not only does it bring attention to what needs to be done, but it also provides people with ways they can make a positive change. For example, what people eat, what forms of transportation they take, and how they recycle all impact the planet.
How did Earth Day start?
The very first Earth Day took place on April 22, 1970. It “activated 20 million Americans ” in launching the “modern environmental movement.” Many “groundbreaking environmental laws soon followed.” Present day, more than 1 billion people celebrate Earth Day every year!
Santa Cruz Earth Day Highlights
During the event, there was musical entertainment from SambaDá as well as a Recycled Fashion Show! Another highlight was the kid’s activity section. These ranged from arts and crafts, face painting, and music with Mothersong to gymnastics and wall climbing.
The fun did not stop there though. There was an Electric Vehicle Showcase, multiple vegetarian food vendors, a beer garden, and even a photo booth. Additionally, Chipper, the California Highway Patrol chipmunk, & the Santa Cruz Warriors mascot taught “best traffic safety behavior with reflective wristbands and bike reflectors.”
Why CORE Gets Involved
Ultimately, the annual event raises environmental awareness and teaches the community how to preserve and protect Santa Cruz. It brings together various organizations, businesses, and people who all share a common goal of bettering the world we live in.
