The CORE Intern/Externship Objective:
Overview
In general, an Internship is thought of as a program which “bridges the gap” between the academic environment and a future work environment. Many employers prefer students who have previous work experience and the Santa Cruz CORE internship provides that. Students that participate in an Internship are generally more confident and more qualified when seeking future employment.
Build a Resume
Students entering the workforce increase their chances of employer interest when they have internships on their resumes. Joining the Team at CORE as an intern will provide students the opportunity to fill their resumes.

During my internship (and after) here, you have helped me understand so much information and took your time to do so and that is invaluable. I appreciate your attention to detail, thorough communication and hands-on instruction. During the times I have shadowed your training sessions I have been able to learn a lot about how to lead clients through exercises verbally and non-verbally with cues. It means a lot to me that you took your time to help me learn and understand all of the concepts involved in training, SMFR, postures, and FMS. Field Experience
The CORE Massage Therapy Internship allows students to gain valuable and intensive hands-on experience in the areas of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. Feedback and constructive criticism is provided by experienced field members, clients, and program director to ensure progress in the field of Massage. Students are also introduced to the organization and structure of a business offering massage to the public. Practitioner client etiquette, SOAP note taking, and cross communication between various health professionals are just some of the skills in which the student will receive ample practice.
Networking
Students who intern are given the opportunity to meet people in the industry. Having valuable, experienced contacts can be helpful in the future for those who are seeking employment. CORE Interns also network with other interns and CORE staff, who can help one another in the future by sharing job and contact information. Interns who work well may also ask if they may use their intern coordinator or boss as a work reference, which boosts a resume's strength. There is also the potential of contracting out with CORE. Core prefers to hire with in.
Level 1
25 hours (20 bodywork hours and 5 non bodywork hours)
Bodywork hours
- Level 1 Interns perform 50 minute massage sessions on CORE staff members and CORE staff members' friends/family
- Feedback forms are filled out and are reviewed by intern and Internship mentor
Recipients of the intern massages get frequent intern massages and are able to give helpful feedback to interns as they begin their journey
Non-Bodywork hours
Level 1 Interns perform various tasks releated to the massage industry allowing for practical experience working at a massage facility. Non- Bodywork hours are included but not limited to the following:
- SOAP Notes
- Massage Room maintenance
- Massage supply maintenance
- Periodic Review
- Mentorship
Level 2
25 hours (20 bodywork hours and 5 non bodywork hours)
Bodywork hours
- Level 2 Interns perform 50 minute massage sessions on CORE staff members, CORE staff members' friends/family, and clients who purchase an Intern massage as a discounted rate in exchange for providing positive and constructive feedback by filling out our feedback form
- Feedback forms are filled out and are reviewed by intern and Internship mentor
Non-Bodywork hours
Level 2 Interns perform various task releated to the massage industry allowing for practical experience working at a massage facility. Non- Bodywork hours are included but not limited to the following:
- SOAP Notes
- Massage Room maintenance
- Massage supply maintenance
- Periodic Review
- Mentorship
